FLOW MAPS
Export of U.S. computers in 2013
Flow map was created using "Distributive Flow Lines Generator" in ArcGIS. The overall workflow included: planning, data preparation, processing, and solving design issues. The later is a central core of flow mapping. Therefore, the aim of this project was to solve clutter problems due to a large amount of data, and a variety of destinations.
After collecting data from U. S. Census Bureau, destination data was filtered to avoid values with computer imports less than 1000. Next, lines were reclassified into six classes according to their values. Further, in order to smooth straight lines, flow lines were edited using Bezier Interpolation algorithm. The problem of flow lines overlapping and overall design of flow map was solved by adjusting parameters of Impedance weight, smoothing line tool and adjusting symbology.
