Kernel Density Estimation

The aim of this project was to analyze the retail market in the city of Salzburg with KDE in order to find areas with a shortage or abundance of supermarkets.

The overall workflow included next steps:

1. Data preparation (clip, filter).

2. Conversion of population density data from polygons to points (centroids).

3. Kernel Density Estimation.

4. Change symbology and analysis of shortage and abundance.

As seen from the left picture, population is concentrated more in the city centre, mainly in the west northern part. While supermarkets in general cover the whole city. Additionally, large concentrations of supermarkets can be seen in the south eastern part. Therefore, people in Maxglan, Elisabeth-Forstadt, and Lehen might have a shortage of supermarkets. In contrast, in the south and Aigen there is an abundance of supermarkets.
